TEN WAYS TO CHANGE THE WORLD WITHOUT LEAVING YOUR HOUSE_

By Robert J. Stanex, Head of Mentoring & Youth Development

Just because we’re not out in the world, doesn’t mean we can’t still change it. Here are ten easy ways you can continue to make an impact in the lives

1_ PAY IT FORWARD

There are plenty of ways you can continue to fundraise for charities. A sponsored silence, reading marathon or sit up challenge could help you raise funds for causes close to your heart. For more ideas check out our fundraising guide here.

2_ PEN TO PAPER

If you see an issue in your community that you think needs attention, write a letter, email or even tweet, to your local MP or Counsellor with your ideas. Try to be solution-focused. Don’t just highlight the problem but give suggestions of how it could be solved.

3_ SPRING CLEAN

Now is the perfect time to de-clutter your room.  Go through your clothes, DVDs, books and decide what you don’t need anymore.  Then box it up ready to take to your local charity shop when it re-opens.

4_ PHONE A FRIEND

It seems like such an insignificant thing but it can have a huge impact on improving the emotional wellbeing of others.  If there is someone you know who you feel might be struggling, drop them a quick message to see how they are and if they want to chat.  In particular, think of those in your community who are elderly or vulnerable.  Your call might be the only voice they have heard that day.

5_ GREEN FINGERS

Bees are critical to our ecosystem’s survival.  Research what flowers you could plant to encourage growth of the bee population. You’ll be able to pick up seeds at most supermarkets or online, but remember to add these to your weekly shop – don’t leave the house just to pick up these non-essentials. Even if you don’t have a garden you could grow them in a window box or recycle a jam jar or carton into a plant pot.

6_ HOME SCHOOL

Lots of parents are finding home schooling whilst working from home challenging.  Is there a way you could help? If you are knowledgable about a particular topic could you offer to teach this to others, either within your household or online?

7_ RAISE YOUR VOICE

Many voices shout louder than one. If you want to raise the profile of an issue you are passionate about, try setting up an online petition and use social media to promote your campaign.

8_ WORK OF ART

Art can be a powerful tool in sharing an experience or championing a cause. Take this time to paint, write or compose. Is there a way you could use online platforms to collaborate with other artists?

9_ CONVERSATIONS FOR CHANGE

Why not organise your own Conversations for Change event. Set up a group call with friends to discuss a social issue which is important to you and see if you can collectively come up with ways to tackle it.

10_ STAY AT HOME

The most important thing you can do to make a real impact today is follow guidance and physically distance. We all want to help where we can, but to combat this virus the best thing you can do is to stay inside.

We need to act together, being kind and supporting one another. Only by doing this will we start to make a difference.

Remember to wash your hands, stay at home and keep changing the world!
