The Aspiring Medics

Yusuf, a medical student at Oxford University, is on a mission to democratise the application process and tackle educational inequity in the medicine applications industry.

Coming from a working-class background, Yusuf is a strong believer that “while talent is everywhere, opportunity is not”, and is determined to help provide it where he can. Understanding the socio-economic disparities in pursuing medicine, his aim is to bridge the gap and support young people from all backgrounds who want to venture into the medical world.

Yusuf founded The Aspiring Medics (TAM) to help students from diverse backgrounds pursue careers in medicine. TAM offers digital courses, work experience and interview preparation. In the last 12 months alone, they have reached over 350,000 views on their website and YouTube.

TAM has provided free access to courses for over 3,000 school students, and empowers aspiring medics through role models, webinars, and diverse student stories. Most recently they have developed, the world's first AI Medicine Interview Platform, called AVA (Your AI Virtual Assistant) which is able to provide 24/7 personalised feedback to students in real time. With social impact at the beating heart of The Aspiring Medics, they have worked with over 100+ schools and charities as well as the NHS.

The organisation has also raised over £50,000 from grants and awards including from the Oxford Foundry, Santander Universities and the UK Young Innovator Award. Under his leadership The Aspiring Medics has grown from an idea to a small group of friends to a thriving social enterprise with over 100+ medical students and doctors.

Yusuf is kind, empathetic, and giving in nature. He is a change-maker our world needs.
