When Maryam volunteered for the Al-Isharah deaf charity she learnt sign language to better understand the challenges deaf people face. It is a determination and commitment she brings to everything she does from her charity events such as raising £3,000 for orphans in Africa to campaigning for women against issues such as FGM and domestic violence. She volunteered for her local MP, and for a community organisation creating links within Tower Hamlets, and appears regularly on a youth TV show. She also inspires primary school children to follow her love of books by helping at a summer holiday reading club.
