THE DIANA AWARD LAUNCHES ‘MENTOR OF THE YEAR AWARD’ IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE SME AWARDS

Mentoring sessions start as The Diana Award is announced as Charity Partner 2018 with the SME National Business Awards

19 April 2018

Today (19 April 2018): The Diana Award is delighted to be chosen as Charity Partner 2018 with the SME National Business Awards. The partnership will see the launch of the ‘Diana Award Mentor of the Year Award’ for business people who have acted as a mentor in their community over the last year.

The news comes as The Diana Award kicks-off the Summer Term phase of their mentoring programme with over 40 businesses and 40 schools in Birmingham and Solihul, Leeds City Region, Sheffield City Region and York.

The Diana Award Mentoring Programme pairs volunteer mentors from local businesses with pre-GCSE teens to give them an insight into the world of work and career skills training. The programme places a strong emphasis on social action; mentors and mentees work together to develop a campaign around a social issue that affects their community.

The Diana Award was set up in memory of Diana, Princess of Wales, and her belief that young people have the power to change the world for the better.

Tessy Ojo, CEO of The Diana Award, says:

“Our Mentoring Programme recognises the role mentoring has to play in breaking down the barriers to social mobility. Through the programme we are matching over 3000 pre-GCSE students with mentors from the world of work to improve post-secondary work readiness and instil active citizenship. We are delighted to have been selected as this year’s charity partner for the SME National Business Awards. With the money raised from the partnership we hope we are able to engage more young people in this programme.

At The Diana Award we celebrate active citizenship in young people through our Awards Programme. The launch of ‘The Diana Award Mentor of the Year’ is a great opportunity to recognise adults from local businesses who are going above and beyond to support someone in their workplace, or community through mentoring.”

“Mentoring is such an important part of young people’s development. The hard work and dedication that The Diana Award team put into ensuring that business mentors are matched with the potential stars of the future is truly inspiring. We are thrilled to have them as our Charity Partner and very much look forward to working with them.”

The Diana Award Mentoring Campaign aims to revolutionize the ‘mentor’ conversation and break the stereotypical view of who a mentor can be; reinforcing that anyone can give back as a mentor regardless of age, industry or demographic.
