The The Diana Award’s Mentoring Programme works with schools to target young people (aged 11-18yrs) who are at risk of becoming NEET (Not in education or employment) and who may benefit from having a positive role model.  We support these young people by collaborating with local partners and businesses who provide mentors to give them life-changing experiences and insights into the world of work.

The programme places a strong emphasis on social action; in addition to career skills training, mentors and mentees work together to develop a campaign around a social issue that affects their community. This two pronged approach prepares young people for their post-secondary future and instils a sense of active citizenship. Your role is key to the success of our Mentoring Programme as you will be working with our inspiring corporate mentors. You will be responsible for facilitating their induction and training, supporting them on their individual journey’s through the programme and ensuring relevant feedback is given for them to share with their employer.

In addition to supporting our volunteer mentors, you will also play a vital role in ensuring that all participants involved in the programme are safeguarded effectively, as Mentoring Programme Safeguarding Lead.


Volunteer Coordination

This role will be responsible for supporting mentors across Leeds, Birmingham, London and Jersey. Travel to those regions will be required for meetings and training sessions.

  • Coordinate all aspects of the volunteer mentor journey from attracting businesses and individuals, safe recruitment and selection (including DBS checks), training and ongoing support
  • Design and facilitate a high quality bespoke training programme designed for Mentors, both online and face to face
  • Act as a central point of contact for mentoring enquiries
  • Coordinate communications to corporate partners and mentors about the mentoring programme
  • Work with the Programme Manager and Communications Team to promote mentor opportunities across owned channels, and more widely
  • Work with the Impact and Evaluation Team to deliver an effective evaluation framework which captures the mentor journey/experience and the impact of the programme more widely
  • Develop robust volunteer policies and procedures which comply with Diana Award organisational policies, and current legislation (including risk management, health and safety, safeguarding and data protection)
  • Coordinate workplace visits, career days and work experience opportunities for mentees (with support from the wider Mentoring Team)

Safeguarding Officer

Act as Safeguarding Lead for the Mentoring Programme, duties and responsibilities as follows.

Mentoring Programme Safeguarding Lead

  • Act as the first point of contact for any safeguarding concerns for the Mentoring Programme, and in the absence of other programme leads more organisation wide, as is required
  • Lead on the design and review of capturing informed consent from programme participants
  • Ensure all safeguarding issues concerning mentees are responded to appropriately
  • Ensure that mentors understand our safeguarding policy and procedures and know what to do if they have concerns about a mentee’s welfare, delivered both through the training programme, and on an ongoing basis
  • Receive and record information from anyone who has concerns about a mentee taking part in the programme
  • Take the lead on responding to information that may constitute a safeguarding concern, including a concern that an adult involved in the programme may present a risk to beneficiaries
  • Liaise with/pass on information to and receive information from statutory agencies where required

General Safeguarding Duties 

  • Work with fellow safeguarding officers in developing and reviewing The Diana Award’s safeguarding policies and procedures
  • Store and retain records according to legal requirements and The Diana Award’s safeguarding policy and procedures
  • Be familiar with issues relating to child protection, safeguarding and abuse, and keep up to date with new developments in this area
  • Attend regular training in issues relevant to safeguarding and share knowledge from that training with everyone who works or volunteers with or for children, young people and adults at risk at The Diana Award
  • Attend monthly safeguarding forum meetings, and other meetings as arranged
  • Work flexibly as may be required and carry out any other reasonable duties

  • Experience of volunteer management (experience working with corporate volunteers is a bonus)
  • Knowledge and experience in safeguarding and child protection (or willingness to undertake training)
  • Experience of writing clear, concise and engaging policies and procedures
  • A proven track record in designing and delivering effective and engaging training to volunteers
