Participation in youth-led social action can support young people in the development of their careers skills, improving education and employment outcomes and enhancing social mobility. 81% of young people participating in social action believe it will help them get a job in the future.

#BeSeen

Motivated by their personal experiences and discussions in the Mentoring Programme about the Black Lives Matter Movement and negative portrayals of young people in the media, two mentees from The Global Academy came up with a plan. With the support of their peers, mentors, and The Diana Award staff, they worked to transform their youth-led social action project into a fully-fledged campaign. We want to change the narrative and show that young people are proud, powerful and proactive.

#HoodedHelpers

Last year, mentees in Jersey planned and delivered their youth-led social action project with support from The Diana Award Staff, volunteer mentors and the wider community. Hooded Helpers challenged negative stereotypes and promoted positive messages about young people instead.

Mentees also fundraised for the Move On Youth Café (Jersey Youth Service) to provide them with equipment for their young people. Mentees and volunteer mentors held a car wash and raised £500, vastly exceeding their target of £150. With support from the Jersey Government Department of Art and Culture, they also commissioned a graffiti artwork which will be seen in Millennium Park, St Helier, for years to come.

WHAT IS THE SOCIAL ACTION ACCELERATOR PROGRAMME_

Two groups of young people from each region will be supported by The Diana Award staff and volunteer mentors for a further six months by providing ongoing advice and guidance, as well as resources to support the implementation of the project, such as space and equipment.
