Today (30 November 2016): Alex Holmes, Head of the Anti-Bullying Campaign at The Diana Award, a charity set up in memory of Princess Diana, has been awarded the ‘Queen’s Young Leader’. He is the only young person in England to receive this prestigious award.
Alex received The Diana Award in 2004 for tackling bullying in his school and community after being bullied at school. He came up with the idea of Anti-Bullying Ambassadors; trained young people who can champion tackling all forms of bullying and learn how to keep themselves and others safe online and offline.
Today, Alex heads-up The Diana Award Anti-Bullying Ambassadors programme. Since its inception over ten years ago, this successful peer-led programme has trained more than 20,000 Anti-Bullying Ambassadors in schools and communities across the UK and Ireland. It receives government funding and attracts the support of cyber-giants such including; Facebook, Vodafone, Google and Ask.fm.
Alex sits on a number of bullying advisory boards and helps to organise Anti-Bullying Week in the UK. He has set up a programme called ‘Coz I Can’, which supports young people to make a difference in their community. In the future, Alex would like to introduce ‘happiness training’ into schools, organisations and workplaces through his idea of ‘Smile and Compliment days’.
Alex Holmes, says: “I am excited to receive this Award and meet other young people from around the world who have amazing ideas and knowledge to share. The Award will provide me with an opportunity to run my ideas past a trusted mentor and learn about good project management’.
Tessy Ojo, CEO of The Diana Award, say: “We all at the Diana Award are extremely proud of this wonderful achievement. I have watched Alex grow from a Diana Awardholder to now running our Anti-Bullying Campaign, supporting thousands of young people across the world, this Award today reinforces what we already know, that Alex, like other Diana Award Holders are exceptional young people, who are determined to change their world for the better!
