Over forty young people aged between 9 – 18 applied and after a ‘selection weekend’ sixteen incredible young people were accepted.

The Anti-Bullying Ambassadors Youth Board was established to advise and educate young people on the effects on bullying and devise strategic plans to tackle bullying in their local communities whilst feeding their experiences into our national programme.

The Anti-Bullying Ambassadors final meeting was Friday 31st May 2013 and together we celebrated their successes!

Kieran Stanbridge, 17, Chair of the Youth Board said: “I have very much enjoyed being on the Anti-Bullying Ambassadors Youth Board; over the past twelve months we have dedicated our time to developing and showcasing good anti-bullying practice across the UK. Together we have made hundreds of schools across the UK a safer and happier environment for students, raised the national profile of bullying to policy leaders and Government and organised events for National Anti-Bullying Week! It has been amazing to work first hand with inspiring young people and to see them make a sustained impact in their local communities. I personally would like to thank the Diana Award for setting up the Anti-Bullying Ambassadors Youth Board and giving us all this amazing opportunity.”

On Tuesday 28th May the Diana Award held an exciting scoring session with current Diana Award Holders and Mentors to assess the latest nominations.

The session gave volunteers the opportunity to read the amazing stories of young people nominated and how they were acting as an inspirational role model to their schools and communities. You can read the stories of previous Diana Award Holders here

Diana Award Holder, Emily, aged 16, volunteered for the Awards Scorers Group and said “The scoring day was a great way to get involved with the Diana Award, to get the opportunity to see what young inspirational people are getting the award for and what they have achieved is amazing! It is also an opportunity to give something back to the Diana Award as they have given so much to me over the years. I think that the scoring day was a massive success and it was really enjoyable! Thank you to everyone who organised it.”

The Diana Award are looking to establish links to businesses and organisations who can support our ‘Insight Into…’ career days in August 2013.

A recent report by the Work Foundation showed that ‘youth unemployment has risen faster in Britain than in any other G8 country’, January 2013. The report stated that the number of young people out of work had increased by 35% between 2008 and 2011, compared with an average of 15% in G8 countries.

A 2012 paper by The Young Foundation demonstrates that if young people’s capabilities of confidence, resilience and self-discipline can be encouraged then education, employment and health outcomes are greatly increased.

Alongside our Training and Mentoring Programme which offers employability skills and peer-support to young people the ‘Insight Into… Days’ will raise aspirations and offer career guidance.

The first sessions known as PP: Sixth will be held by our friends at Pure Potential – these events will offer you advice on university applications, student finance, interview skills and how to write an outstanding personal statement. In addition, you will have the unique opportunity to meet leading professionals from a number of industries during our industry workshops. The events are held in partnership with six leading universities on the following dates:

1. Aston University – Tuesday, 25th June: accountancy, law, medicine & retail
2. University of Manchester – Friday, 28th June: accountancy, law & medicine
3. University of Southampton – Monday, 1st July: law, medicine & retail
4. University College London – Wednesday, 3rd July: accountancy, investment banking, law and medicine
5. Newcastle University – Friday, 5th July: law, medicine & teaching
6. Imperial College, London – Monday, 8th July: accountancy, investment banking, law, medicine & teaching

If you are in Year 12, attend a state school or college and are on-track to achieve 3 Bs for your A-Levels then the PP: Sixth events are a fantastic opportunity for you to jump-start your UCAS application and explore your future career options.

You can sign up via the Pure Potential website by clicking here.

Please mention that you are a Diana Award Holder for the ‘how did you hear about us’ question.

The Diana Award will be launching more ‘Insight Into…’ days over the next few weeks if you would like to support us with this new career programme please do email Katie Marple, Head of Awards and Network on katie.marple@diana-award.org.uk

“I am able to discuss various ways in which my employability skills have been improved upon through being part of the Diana Network, and all of the truly inspirational opportunities they offer.”

Young people are at the heart of the Diana Award and as such we are proud to announce our two Diana Award Holder Trustees, Alex Farrow and Binda Bhudia-Patel.

Over fifteen young people were interested in the position and the final interviews were conducted by Tessy Ojo, Executive Director, John Box, Chair of Trustees and Zishaan Salam, Diana Award Holder Trustee 2012.

Alex and Binda will be a driving force in the strategic direction of the Diana Award and represent the voice of Award Holders and young people involved with our Award Scheme and ongoing youth programmes:

The Diana Network

The Training and Mentoring Programme

The Diana Anti-Bullying Ambassador Programme

Diana Award Executive Director, Tessy Ojo, said “We had very strong candidates and were incredibly spoilt for choice as we felt that they all had a lot to contribute to the Diana Award in various ways. Alex and Binda’s commitment and passion for the Award came through really strongly as well as their experience in developing partnerships, which we feel will be hugely beneficial to the Diana Award. We look forward to working with them over the next 24 months.”

Award and Network Coordinator, Katie Marple, caught up with Alex and Binda to find out why they applied for the role and what they are most looking forward to in their new positions:

Alex Farrow
My name is Alex, I live in London and have been an Award Holder since 2005. I’m an actor, training and facilitator and my work allows me to meet young people from around the world who do incredible things trying to change the lives of those around them.

After the Asian Tsunami on Boxing Day 2004, I felt compelled to do something to help the millions affected by the disaster – all while at home, we opened more Christmas presents with friends and family. Along with other young people in the UK, I coordinated the raising of around £200,000 supporting national appeals and the rebuilding and running of a local school in Sri Lanka.

I have been very fortunate to have been supported by the Diana Award to succeed in the projects I have been part of (particularly the UK Youth Climate Coalition) and I put myself forward to be a Trustee of the Award to ensure every Award Holder has the same opportunities.

The Award is a celebration of what young people do in their communities, but it has the potential to be a platform to help them achieve even more. I’m looking forward to meeting Award Holders, hearing their aspirations and hopes for the Award and making what we do more meaningful and connected with the lives, needs and ambitions of Award Holders.

Binda Bhudia-Patel
“I received my Diana Award for contributing to my school’s anti-bullying scheme, Connect. I saw first-hand the negative effects bullying had on my peers and wanted to do something to change that. I worked with other students to raise awareness of the issue and organise different ways for us to deter bullying. I was also heavily involved with the School Council and helped the school raise money for Great Ormond Street Hospital and the Tsunami Appeal.

Throughout my life, from school to university to now being a working professional, the Diana Award has been a positive and reinforcing constant which has contributed directly to my success in so many ways. I am now at a stage in my life where I have the time and experience to give something back to the Award and Award Holders and I am really excited about being given this opportunity (thank you for selecting me!!). There are so many aspects of the role that I am looking forward to, but I have to say, the main one for me is having the chance to represent the views of Award Holders and to use our voice to influence the decisions made by the Board of Trustees.

As a Trustee of such a prestigious charity I have the opportunity and responsibility to represent the views of so many amazing young people, and feel that I am definitely up for the challenge!”

Keep up to date with our Award Holder Trustees’ activities by joining us on Facebook and Twitter

Ashley “Twist” Glazebrook and Glen “Pulse” Murphy said: “We’re really pleased to be Ambassadors for the Diana Award for another year. It’s a great charity and we think Princess Diana would be proud of the young Award Holders who give up their time to help others. Diana Award Holders are really inspirational and we are amazed to find so many role models at such a young age, that’s why we believe in this charity. We know how important it is to have role models when you are growing up and we have always tried to set a good example. The Diana Award has allowed us to use dance in a creative way and show young people that hard work and respect for others will help you to succeed. We look forward to what 2013 has in store for us!”

Twist and Pulse met at the BRIT School of Performing Arts and have pioneered a new genre of dance called Streetomedy© – combining streetdance and comedy. They have performed to over 1,000,000 people. Born and bred South Londoners, they have quickly become role models for young people around the UK today. They have shown that with hard work, dedication and value for others you can succeed. They provide the perfect antidote to the social issues facing our young people, providing purpose and motivation at difficult times.

Tessy Ojo, Executive Director of the Diana Award, said: “We are delighted Twist and Pulse are Ambassadors for the Diana Award. They are role great models for young people and always bring energy and enthusiasm to our events. We are hugely grateful for their support and look forward to another great year working with Ashley and Glen.”

Twist and Pulse will perform and present awards to young people at the National Diana Award Ceremony at Barclays corporate on 11th March 2013.
